Quintiq Supply Chain Software Review

Quintiq Technology Review

Quintiq has developed a three layer application architecture to combine the benefits of standard Supply Chain Planning software features with the extensibility of adaptable software to meet the different individual needs of each company. The first layer represents around 80% of the software solution, includes the Standard Quintiq Application Suite and has many of the features of an SOA platform. The difference is that it is more of a SCP application enabled by the specific software defined in the other two layers: the Industry Solution layer and Customer Specific layer.

  • Business Modeler – Defines business objects, object attributes, their relationships and rules governing the objects.
  • Propagator and Declarative Logic – Propagator determines when declarative logic is performed; the declarative logic consists of functions, table functions, and constraints.
  • Optimization Algorithms – Has a number of algorithms that can be configured to solve complex and routine calculations that take into account details defined in the Business Model.
  • Flexible User Interface – Supports tailoring of the presentation layer or modification of the user interface based on roles, preferences or permissions.
  • Flexible Integration – Provides for the exchange of data with other systems using most of the standard technologies. A partial list includes ODBC, JMS, .NET, FTP and XML.
  • Scalable Real-Time and Multi-User System – Covers Client, Server and ODBC Integrator. Several other advanced modules are available including Java Thin Client, Knowledge Base Server and Message Integrator.

There are a number of different versions for the Industry Solution layers; with each version generally addressing a different market segment. The industry layer addresses resources, machines, timing, and other industry specifics.

The third and final layer is the Customer Specific layer that contains each customer's configurations such as machine specific logic, system integration and customer order dialogs.

Software Technology

Quintiq develops software with Microsoft Visual Studio for C++ and Eclipse for Java development suites. Other development technologies include J2EE, JBOSS, JSF, JQuery, JMS, SOAP and XML. Client technologies include Windows .NET clients and Java thin clients, system integration technologies cover SOAP, JMS, .NET and ODBC. Supported operating systems are Windows and UNIX, and databases are Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server and MySQL.

Integration Technology

Integration with other systems is addressed in the first architecture layer, the Standard Quintiq Application Suite, and covers many of the industry standard technologies: ODBC, JMS, SOAP, Web Services, .NET Types, MQ, Flat Files, FTP, XML, Fixed Field Files, Delimited Format Files, MS Excel, SMTP GIS (Geographic Information System – mapping of geographic locations) and LDAP. Quintiq is also SAP Netweaver certified.

Customization Technologies

Customers select a Market Solution template for their industry; the Standard, Industry and Customer layers are then configured based on customer requirements. The Standard Quintiq Application Suite layer deals with very similar setups in a typical SOA suite. The Industry layer requires setup for resources, machines and other industry specific requirements. The Customer Specific layer allows for each customer to define logic, interfaces and dialogs specific to their requirements. There is also a tool for end users to define specific configuration views to meet their requirements.
