Infor Lawson Software Review

Infor Lawson Strengths and Weaknesses

Competitive positioning in the Supply Chain software market is highlighted with the following strengths and weaknesses.

Infor Lawson Strengths

  • The Lawson M3 supply chain planning software modules provide robust functionality, with some of the feature sets coming from their industry specific add-on modules.
  • Lawson M3 Supply Chain Management software modules have strong integration, including a single database model, between SCM modules and the M3 ERP software.
  • Lawson provides robust business intelligence (BI) and analytics, through the M3 Analytics module, to help evaluate and improve supply chain performance.
  • M3 Supply Chain Planning software modules provide strong solutions for mid-market manufacturers, wholesalers, food and beverage, and fashion businesses.
  • The Lawson M3 customer base is generally satisfied. Lawson has maintained customers for over two and three decades.
  • Infor Lawson offers particularly strong financial or accounting software that is tightly integrated into its supply chain system.
  • Since the 2010 appointment of Charles Phillips as CEO, Infor has significantly increased their R&D, and integration among multiple Infor portfolio products in a not so subtle attempt to elevate the company's reputation from an aggregator to an innovator. Early signs of a new Infor are evident, but the company still has a long way to go in order to be included with the likes of SAP, Oracle, Microsoft and other competitors who regularly demonstrate business software innovation.

Infor Lawson Weaknesses

  • Infor Lawson typically does not sell their Supply Chain Management software modules outside their M3 ERP customer base.
  • Infor Lawson M3 really only addresses light discrete manufacturing, distribution, fashion, and food and beverage industries.
  • Lawson M3 does not support multi-echelon inventory optimization.
  • M3 Supply Chain Execution software does not generally meet the needs for complex or sophisticated supply chain operations.
  • M3 Transportation Management System lacks many of the advanced features required by midsize and global companies.
  • Infor generally lacks timely adoption of disruptive technologies such as cloud, mobile, social, big data, gamification, customer experience and more. However, the company has begun to slowly but steadily address these issues. While native, multi-tenant cloud delivery remains uncertain, the company has released a private social network product called Local.ly, which is slated to be cross pollinated into several Infor ERP solutions, including Lawson.
  • The Infor Lawson user interface is dated. Navigation is straight-forward, but the application lacks an engaging user experience (UX). Interestingly, the UX may ultimately become a competitive strength. Infor has created an internal design team, called Hook & Loop, with the goal to bring more engaging and standardized design and user interfaces to many Infor software portfolio products.
